Special Education at WPS

Inclusive education means all students can access and fully participate in learning, supported by reasonable adjustments and teaching strategies tailored to meet their individual needs.

Special and inclusive education teachers develop and deliver specialised learning programs for students (Kindergarten to Year 12) who have a range of disabilities and learning difficulties. Special and inclusive education teachers may work in a variety of educational settings throughout their careers.

The enrolment of students within the Wollondilly Public School Support Unit is managed via the Queanbeyan District Education Office. Students are considered for enrolment in the Wollondilly Public School Support Unit through the NSW DoE Access Request process. A student’s local school is to complete the Access Request for consideration through the Queanbeyan District Education Office Support Class Placement Panel.

Students whom are placed (through the Queanbeyan District Education Office Placement Panel) in to the Wollondilly Public School Support Unit are not calculated in the Wollondilly Public School mainstream enrolment calculations and are staffed separately.

For further information about enrolment in a Support Unit, please contact the Queanbeyan District Education Office on 6200 5000 or speak with your local school Principal.

Our Special Education Classes

At Wollondilly we have three Supported Learning Classes.

1. Multi Categorial (referred to as MC)

In the NSW Department of Education (DoE), an 'MC class' is a Multi-Categorical support class for students with moderate to high learning and support needs, including those with intellectual disability, autism, emotional disturbance, or physical disability. These classes provide intensive, personalized support, often within a mainstream school setting, with a curriculum adapted to the individual needs of the students.

2. Intellectual Mild (referred to as IM)

An 'Intellectual Mild' (IM) class in NSW is a specialist support class within the NSW Department of Education for students with a mild intellectual disability. These classes provide intensive, individualized support with a smaller student-to-teacher ratio and a focus on a personalized learning program to help students access the curriculum and develop skills.

3. Early Intervention Unit (referred to as EIU)

An EIU class is an Early Intervention Unit class in NSW, which provides specialized support for preschool-aged children (typically from age 3 to school entry) with a disability or learning support need. These units offer educational programs and support for both the children and their families, and aim to prepare the child for a smooth transition into school.
